More Information About the March 15 Concert

In keeping with Michael Rice's wishes, the planned concert is not intended as a commemoration of Michael's life. It does celebrate — as do all of our concerts — the vibrant musical life of the FAC, of which Michael was such a vital part for 31 years. The concert will feature FAC Strings Chamber Music students playing pieces that were already scheduled for performance at this point in the year. The concert will conclude with a personal gesture of respect to Michael composed by FAC instructor and composer-in-residence, Dr. Jon Grier. Dr. Grier has crafted a work for piano, strings and soprano entitled Imprint. The vocal part will be sung by renowned Greenville soprano Mary Freeman.

The Recital Hall at the Fine Arts Center seats 125. Anticipating that many people will be interested in attending this concert, we are offering two shows — one at 6:30 p.m. and one at 8 p.m. The 6:30 p.m. program will be shorter and will feature John Ravnan’s most advanced chamber music students. After the concert, around 7:30 p.m., Dr. Roy Fluhrer will lead a brief ceremony, dedicating the FAC Voice Studio in Michael Rice's name.

Though the concert is free, tickets for the 6:30 p.m. show are required. Please call the FAC office at 864-355-2550 to reserve a ticket.

All of the pieces from the first show will be reprised at the 8 p.m. performance, with additional performances by the younger chamber music students. This program is more designed for the family and friends of the student performers, but all are welcome. Reservations are not required.

A Concert for Michael Rice

On Thursday, March 15, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall, a concert honoring Michael Rice will be held. We are not calling it a “memorial concert," as Michael did not want that, but it will be a concert premiering an extraordinary piece of music written for him by our Composer-in-Residence, Dr. Jon Grier. The composition will feature John Ravnan’s strings students with soprano Mary Freeman and will be followed by the dedication of the Voice Studio in Michael's name.

Tickets are required to attend this event. The tickets are free, but they are necessary because we have limited space. Those wishing to attend should call the school office at 864-355-2551 during business hours (8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday) to make reservations. Those reserving tickets may pick them up from the office, or the tickets may be picked up at the door on the evening of the concert. We will not be able to admit those without a ticket.

An additional concert will be offered at 8 p.m. and will include additional strings selections by Mr. Ravnan's students. The 8 p.m. performance will be open to the public with no reservation required.

2012 National Juried High School Metals Exhibition on Display Now at FAC

From February 3 to March 23, 2012, you can view the 2012 National Juried High School Metals Exhibition in the Sheffield Wood Gallery at FAC.
The biennial National Juried High School Metalsmithing Exhibition was started by retired Fine Arts Center metals teacher Susan Willis, and current metals teacher Katy Bergman Cassell is continuing the tradition. "It connects me to the other teachers in the country who share a passion for this media and who are making the extra effort to gain national exposure for our students' work," says Ms. Cassell.
The goals of the exhibition are to highlight the accomplishments of students and teachers at the high school level, to showcase how metal can be used to achieve artistic expression, and to generate interest in and excitement about the fields of metals and enameling. Work eligible for submission included jewelry, vessels, objects, enameling, and even mixed media, as long as metal was the primary material. The show was open to all high school students and recent graduates, and the work must have been made within the last three years during high school.
Of 163 entries from 18 programs in 9 states, 79 were accepted, including 11 works from FAC students. Juror Bob Ebendorf also chose awards for exceptional pieces.
Said Ebendorf, "There was such wonderful work, much of it on par with what college students create. In celebration of this endeavor by the teachers and students, I’d like them all to be included in the invitational 2014 National High School Metals Exhibition. Congratulations to all students who entered. Submitting their work for judgment and risking non-acceptance takes courage."

Tonight's the Night!

While those three words have been often employed by pop musicians with other things in mind, tonight IS the the night we've been looking forward to -- A Taste of the Fine Arts takes place from 6-9 this evening at the Fine Arts Center.
We'll enjoy live music by FAC musicians; a preview performance of a scene from Blood Wedding (showing at FAC in March) by the advanced theatre ensemble; a collection of showtunes and other vocal highlights by the voice students; a dance piece choreographed by Brian McGinnis and performed by the advanced dance students; delicious food from Saskatoon, Bagatelle and Coffee Underground; and, of course, dozens of silent and live auction items.

A Week in Tuscany

Casa Mello is a privately-owned home with room for four adults (or a family of five) located in the breathtakingly picturesque walled medieval town of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina in Italy. The village is located in the center of the Tuscany region and is an ideal base for scenic drives and day trips to Florence, Pisa, the medieval towns of Volterra and San Gimignano, and the resort beaches of Follonica and Piombino. Rome is approximately three hours away. Casa Mello has a full kitchen for self-catering and is located on a main street in the village with easy access to shops and restaurants. You can bid on Casa Mello on Friday night at a Taste of the Fine Arts. This auction was one of our most popular last year, and we are looking forward to seeing who will be off to Italy next!

The morning visual arts students in Donna Shank-Major's 2D/3D Design class have donated several handcrafted casebound books that may be used as sketchbooks or journals. Each book represents an original design conceptualized and created independently by the students. These unique, perfectly-sized books would make thoughtful gifts, or they would be a great place to jot your notes or doodles. Make sure to take a look at these clever examples of functional art, and bid on your favorite one in our silent auction on February 3rd.

Last minute auction donations have been flooding in, and we've been so busy taking care of all of the details that we have not had time to mention everything on the blog. We're incredibly grateful to all of the individuals and business owners in Greenville who have been so generous, and we'll be sure to publicly thank them all individually after the event. ARMES Application Process Begins This Week

ARMES (Arts Reaching Middle and Elementary Schools) is a tuition-free program for gifted and talented students in grades 4-8 who live in Greenville County. Classes in Drama, Dance, Strings and Visual Arts are offered after school once or twice a week, depending on the discipline. ARMES Dance, Strings, and Visual Arts classes are offered at the Fine Arts Center and ARMES Drama classes are offered at the Sterling School.

The on-line nomination process will be available from February 1 to April 20, 2012, for students applying for the 2012-13 school year. Any interested student must first be nominated for the ARMES program by a parent, teacher, adult or peer. Students may also nominate themselves. The audition process will be held in May, and nominated students will be notified by the teacher of their discipline with an audition date and time.

A Busy Week for FAC Dancers

On Saturday, January 21st, dancers from all over Greenville gathered at the Fine Arts Center for a full day of dance classes taught by FAC dance students and FAC dance instructor Jan Woodward. The visiting students ranged in age from elementary to high school and had the opportunity to learn a number of different styles of dance, from hip hop to improvisational dance and modern.

FAC dancers are also taking a master classes with Angela Gallo, Assistant Professor of Dance at Coker College, on Monday, January 23rd.

In addition, the morning dancers will be presenting a demonstration on Wednesday, January 25th, at 6:30 p.m. at FAC.

FAC Visual Arts Students Win Scholastic Art Awards

Sixteen visual arts students from the Fine Arts Center participated in the Scholastic Art Awards at Lander University. Founded in 1923, The Scholastic Art Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. and the largest source of scholarship funds for young artists. This awards program showcases outstanding work being produced by students and schools from across the nation. As an annual sponsor, Lander University has hosted the South Carolina regional exhibition for Scholastic for the past 22 years.
The following seven students were awarded a Gold Key:

Rachel Heek for her print, En Pointe
Michael Shillingburg for his print, The Terror
Elizabeth Spring for her design, Tiled Chair
Franky Tran for his Art Portfolio
Dallas Austin for his sculpture, Me in a Suit

Philip Hatfield won an American Vision award for his sculpture, Trinity.
The works of Denzel Harrison, Micah Peek, Madelyn Knight, Catie McCauley, Weston Catron, Stephen Simmons, Anna Huff and Sierra Snipes were selected for exhibition in the show.
Congratulations to all of these talented artists.

The Extraordinary Influence of Michael Rice

In November the Fine Arts Center lost beloved retired voice teacher Michael Rice. Dr. Fluhrer, Director of the Fine Arts Center, co-wrote an editorial to the Greenville News with Bingham Vick Jr. The Greenville News recently published the following response by Frank Garlock, which we would like to share with all of you.

I want to compliment The Greenville News for printing the recent column on Michael Rice. Although I never knew him personally, as a music teacher myself for almost 60 years I wish I could have known this Greenville native because of the influence he had in his chosen profession.
The comments by outstanding musicians in the column reveal the things that made him so successful.
1. “He not only taught music. He taught life lessons.”
2. “Mike was one of those special teachers who didn’t just teach his subject; he taught you to love learning itself ... His expectations for you made you want to achieve, not just in his subject, but in all subjects. His genuine pleasure in your accomplishments made you feel joy ... Michael started teaching me when I was sixteen. He never really stopped.”
3. “He was my teacher, my mentor and my friend. (He was) there for every important event in my career either by helping me prepare or being in the audience.”
4. “His extraordinary life, friendship and masterful teaching, his all encompassing knowledge and skills set Michael apart... His devotion to his family and friends place him above and beyond the expected.”
I believe that any teacher who wants to be effective, in whatever field he has chosen to teach, would do well to emulate the philosophy and life of Michael Rice.

A Taste of the Fine Arts Gets Graphic

If the marvelous new logo is anything to go by, A Taste of the Fine Arts is going to be a sensational event. We’ll reveal auction sneak peeks and more information in the coming days, but today all eyes are on the logo and its creator, Michael Shillingburg.

Michael is a senior visual arts student at the Fine Arts Center. This is his third year in the visual arts program and, due to some inspired advance planning and a grueling academic year as a freshman at Wade Hampton, he now gets to spend all day at FAC.

As you can see by the work showcased here, Michael is predominately a photographer. At least that’s where his passion lies. He’s also a clever graphic artist (ahem, look at that logo again, ladies and gents) who plans to study graphic design and marketing in college.

Michael has his well-trained eye on doing just that at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) next year. Although he has applied to several other outstanding programs, Michael says his top pick is MICA. He attended a summer program there last year after finding out about it at FAC. His instructor encouraged him to apply to MICA’s Summer Pre-College and recommended him to the institute. He was invited to attend and was able to do so thanks, in part, to a grant provided by the Fine Arts Center Foundation.

Michael unhesitatingly says that his life would be very different without FAC. He doubts that he would ever have discovered his interest in photography, and he says he certainly would not be on the same career path or have plans to attend MICA. He’s done a little bit of everything in his time at the school, including drawing, painting, sculpting, ceramics and metals. The opportunity to explore all of those aspects of visual art allowed him to hone his interests and begin to develop them. It looks like he’s off to a very fine start.

January 21st Day of Dance

The Fine Arts Center is offering a Day of Dance on Saturday, January 21st.
The Fine Arts Center high school dancers are volunteering their time for this event, and an intermediate ballet class will be taught by FAC dance instructor Jan Woodward.
The intent of the workshop is to offer dancers the opportunity to take class with other dancers in the community who have a similar passion and interest in dance. The classes offered will be similar to the dance curriculum taught at FAC, with classes in modern dance, improvisation, ballet, repertory, musical theatre and hip-hop. Fine Arts Center high school students will teach some of the choreography that they have been creating, so it should be very interesting for students. The final portion of the workshop will conclude with an informal performance, in which students can share what they learned in the repertory class. We hope dancers will bring some of their own choreography to share as well.
Students may register for up to three classes (one class for $7, two classes for $12, or three classes for $15). There is no charge for the informal performance. Check-in begins at 9:00 am in the lobby of the Fine Arts Center and the day will end by 3:00 pm.
Students may bring their own water bottles, but liquids other than water are not allowed. Students may bring a bag lunch that does not contain greasy foods or other messy items. There is not a cafeteria available for students.
Students in grades 4-12, as well as adults, may attend. Students should pre-register with Jan Woodward by contacting her here. Registration may be possible on the day of the event on a space-available basis. All classes will be held in the Fine Arts Center building.

Bob Ebendorf Lecture at FAC

Ebendorf's work may be found in such prestigious collections as those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution. Michael Rice's Legacy at FAC

To All Who Miss Michael:

Those who loved Michael Rice know of his love for the Fine Arts Center, its students, and its faculty. I have been told of the many expressions of grief posted to the Facebook group. We thank you for your love of Michael and for what he meant to you as a teacher and a man. To say that this has been a difficult time for us would be an understatement: Michael was a colleague for many of us for more than 25 years. Certainly our students occupy our time, but when alone or in the lounge with our colleagues, the loss is palpable. Those who loved Michael also know how fiercely he protected his privacy and, even in death, his final requests reflected this wish for privacy. The Fine Arts Center, respecting that wish and the wishes of his family, has been very careful not to rush to any kind of recognition that would compromise that privacy. There was a brief memorial service attended, at his request, by his family and his Fine Arts Center family. I recently met with his mother and his sister to discuss the various forms of recognition the Center wished to do in his honor, including naming the voice studio after him, establishing a scholarship for a deserving student in the voice program, the composition of piece by composer-in-residence Dr. Jon Grier, and authorizing a special edition of our newsletter dedicated to Michael. The family approved these plans, along with an article that Bing Vick and I authored for The Greenville News. We are awaiting a date when the article will appear.

I understand that a memorial concert was suggested but, obeying the wishes of his family and their concern regarding the sheer number of those wishing to participate and the difficulties and potential disappointments associated with selecting performers, they thought it best, again, to keep the recognition limited to those efforts listed above.

Michael Rice and his legacy will live on in this school and in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, working with him, and studying with him. I leave you with a story his mother told me when I was leaving the family home. I wasn’t clear if it appeared on Facebook, or if it came from a friend, but it is pure Michael: “Michael is in heaven conducting the angel choirs — and correcting their diction!”

The Morning Showcases will begin at 9:15 am, and the Afternoon Showcases will begin at 1:30 pm. Music and Voice performances will take place in the Recital Hall. Dancers Travel to FSU for an Extraordinary Weekend

The dancers of the Fine Arts Center's afternoon dance class traveled to Tallahassee, Florida, to visit Florida State University’s Dance Department and to attend two evening concerts. Joyce Fausone, the Dance Department’s Coordinator of Special Events and Community Relations, arranged a tour of the Dance Department and scheduled an opportunity for the dancers to observe a contemporary class taught by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and a ballet class with Rick McCullough. Patty Phillips, the co-chair of the department, spoke to the dancers about the curriculum and Joyce Fausone spoke about special programs such as FSU in NYC, Dance in Paris and the summer program in Valencia, Spain. Dirk Holleman, the FAC Technical Theatre teacher, acted as chaperone and driver was instrumental in managing the bus and navigating Tallahassee and the FSU campus. Dirk is an alumnus of the Fine Arts Center and of FSU.

Following the tour of the Dance Department, Larry Gerber, Professor of Voice and Coordinator of the Voice Program in the College of Music, gave a tour of the Music building and facilities along with graduate student Heather Stuyverson. Larry Gerber was the first voice teacher at the Fine Arts Center and was Karen Parks’ first voice teacher. Karen Parks is the current voice instructor at the Fine Arts Center.
The FAC students visited Annie Fox’s dorm room and asked her questions about being a dance major at FSU and what college life is really like. Blake Ulmer, an FAC graduate and current FSU dance major, helped set up the dorm visit and talked with the FAC dancers, too.
Jan Woodward, the current FAC dance teacher, earned her M.F.A. in dance from FSU. She had time to speak with Patty Phillips, co-chair of the department and one of her professors in graduate school, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, who is the Founder and Artistic Director of Urban Bush Women and was named FSU’s 2011-2012 Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor, the highest award granted to FSU faculty.
Amanda Porter performed in both of the evening concerts of the Days of Dance, which were two different programs. Amanda performed in Rick McCullough’s Cool Tunes! on Saturday evening and the student-choreographed Awakening on Friday night. Gerri Houlihan, who has been a guest artist at the FAC and is a professor of dance at FSU, also had a lovely piece of choreography performed at the Friday concert.

Coming Monday to a Stage Near You: The Art of the Monologue

Tomorrow is the last day to see "Shifting Plates: A Printmaker's Print Exchange" in the Francis Sheffield Wood gallery at the Fine Arts Center. This exhibit includes the work of several of South Carolina's prominent printmakers and encompasses a wide variety of print media. The exhibit also includes a large, three-panel folding screen, entitled Tempest, that was donated to the permanent FAC collection by artist Phil Garret. Tempest will remain on display after "Shifting Plates" ends tomorrow.

Remembering Michael Rice

The Fine Arts Center lost Michael Rice, a beloved retired teacher this past weekend. The following is an open letter from Dr. Roy Fluhrer, Director of the Fine Arts Center:

To Michael’s students, to Michael’s friends, and to all those who loved him —

This is one of those times when I wish I was more in touch with what is called “social media” but, as I am not, I have asked others to help me with this message. I am told that there are hundreds of posts about Michael’s passing, many seeking more information, others asking what they can do and if there is going to be a ...memorial concert for him, or a scholarship in his name. I don’t have a firm answer about a concert or a scholarship, the faculty here is considering what would be an appropriate way to honor his many years of teaching. Regarding his passing, I have heard many rumors, innuendos, and gossip, and wish to make it clear that I do not, and will not, honor any of it with any comment, I want to preserve “my” Michael, the one who, at his morning coffee in our lounge, always had a witty and tangential observation about the world, or the teacher who could create magic with young voices, or the colleague who was always there when you needed him, or the Michael at Awards Day with his limericks celebrating his graduating students. I will hang on to that, honor that, remember that, cherish that — all the rest is speculation.

I ask that you honor him with remembrances, stories, and events in which Michael made a difference in your lives, post them, and when we issue a special edition of our newsletter (the one thing I am certain that we will do), we will select some to be included for all of us to enjoy.

Immortality also rests in the memories of those who follow us, keep this special man alive there.

The Fine Arts Center Jazz Recital

The afternoon Jazz students will be performing a selection of songs that they have been perfecting this year. In fact, they have recorded a CD of the music they will be playing at the Wednesday night recital. If you find that it's the best thing you've heard all week, you can take home a copy of your very own to listen to again and again!

The Fall Voice Recital: One Night Only!

The Fine Arts Center Fall Voice Recital will take place on Thursday, November 10th, at 7:00 pm in the black box theater. This is a milestone performance that you will not want to miss. The students will perform five genres of music in five languages, with opening and closing numbers from classical and musical theater pieces that will feature students from the Fine Arts Center dance classes. Students from the Fine Arts Center Jazz Band have formed a special group to accompany this particular performance and will take part in the Pop and Jazz segments of the recital. In addition, Technical Theatre students have participated in the lighting and sound design of the show. This level of collaboration between the Voice class and the other departments is a first, and the students are very excited. You should be excited, too! Where else are you going to find this kind of entertainment on a Thursday night, for FREE? A reception will follow the performance.

Well Worth the Effort

Saturday morning's tree planting went very well. We had a great volunteer turnout; students, parents, and faculty members all worked together to plant a dozen trees in approximately two hours. Although it felt like Chicago (40 degrees and very windy) on the hill beside the school, everyone pitched in and got the job done. Thanks to everyone who participated, and thanks again to Trees Greenville for donating the trees to beautify our grounds. We're excited about watching them grow alongside our FAC students!

That Awkward Stage Theatre Project: Antigone

With a wittily-worded moniker and a determination to stage Greek tragedy with teenage aplomb, That Awkward Stage Theatre Project will present Antigone in the Fine Arts Center's black box theater this weekend only. The show will begin at 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 3:00 pm on Sunday.

Have an all-out arts weekend (take a look at the previous post for ideas) and plan to see Antigone as a way of encouraging these ambitious (and probably not-so-awkward) teens in their theatrical ventures while brushing up on your Greek classics. If nothing else, being able to nonchalantly reference Sophocles in casual conversation come Monday will give you major nerd cred.

The arts are alive in Greenville in November; just take a look at the Fine Arts Center Events calendar!

We'll be planting trees on the Fine Arts Center campus this Saturday, beginning at 9:00 am, thanks to Trees Greenville and all of the volunteers who will come out to help. (You know you want to be there.)

This weekend will be an eventful one off-campus, as well: Greenville Open Studios will be taking place all over Greenville County. Fine Arts Center students are encouraged to visit the artists in their studios to get a glimpse of the visual arts in process. There are more than 120 artists in various media involved in this year's event!

In addition, Fine Arts Center and ARMES performing arts students will be showcasing their talents this month in several recitals. Come listen!

November is also the month when prospective Fine Arts Center students will have an opportunity to visit the Fine Arts Center to observe classes and learn more about the curriculum. Interested students should visit the home page for more information.

What better time is there to get excited about planting a tree than fall? It's Fashion Week for our leafy friends as they strut their stuff in gorgeous colors and make us envious of their long limbs. Admit it -- you want to get out and get dirty with these spectacular creatures!

Trees Greenville has been kind enough to donate more than a dozen trees to become part of the new landscaping project on the FAC grounds. We need volunteers to help us get these beauties planted, so grab your gardening gloves and come join us! We'll meet at the Fine Arts Center on Saturday, November 5th, at 9:00 am, rain or shine.
